The faculty of mathematics prepares experts for research, industrial and pedagogical activities.

Graduates of the faculty work in research, developmental and educational institutions, in departments of the management information systems and computer centers of the enterprises of Northwest of the Russian Federation.

The faculty trains bachelors in two spheres:
     - Mathematics;
     - Applied mathematics and computer science.

Preparation of students is accomplished on six specializations, two of which are scientific and applied (maths and software of computers and automated systems; mathematical modeling), and four are scientific (geometry and topology; mathematical analysis; probability theory and mathematical statistics; computer science and new information technologies in training).

The senior students may take courses according to their individual curricula.

Upon completing 4 years of studies in bachelor school it is possible to continue training in the magistracy (2 years) or within 1 year for reception of the diploma in a speciality 010100-mathematics.

Training in the magistracy is accomplished under the following programs:

510104 - geometry and topology
510105 - theory of probabilities and mathematical statistics
510111 - functional analysis
510202 - mathematical modeling
510208 - mathematical cybernetics
510209 - maths and software for computers
510210 - software of computing systems

The faculty holds postgraduate study and the Council on defence of master's theses on a speciality 05.13.16 - Application of computer facilities, mathematical modeling and mathematical methods in scientific researches.

Teachers of faculty participate in scientific researches on themes of the Russian programs "Universities of Russia", "Integration" etc.

The faculty carries out scientific research under orders of the enterprises and organizations of the Northwest of Russia. Within the framework of the contract with the Kola center of science of the Russian Academy of Science the research laboratory is open at the faculty. The faculty supervises the branch of university (in Apatity) in training of bachelors on "Applied mathematics and computer science" and "Information systems".

The faculty has agreements on joint research in the field of mathematics with universities of Finland, Poland, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, the USA.

The chairs train specialists in the following spheres:

  • mathematical analysis;
  • geometry and topology;
  • theory of probabilities and mathematical statistics;
  • new information technologies in training;
  • mathematical modeling and software of control systems;
  • maths and software.
